Fully Restored and Renovated, ‘L.A. Confidential’ House Is Picture-Perfect

It’s amazing what a difference a couple of years—and a couple of talented designers—can make.

Two years ago, a famous Hollywood-area home that played a crucial role as Kim Basinger’s residence in the film “L.A. Confidential” sold for $3.5 million.

However, before that sale, the home hadn’t changed hands in nearly 70 years. While it still had plenty of glamorous old Hollywood touches, it needed more than a few nips and tucks to bring it into the present day.

Cue the design-developer duo Frances Hoge and Allison Meyerson of Falala Development. They unleashed their creative design talents on the 5,000-square-foot classic Spanish-style mansion. It’s now ready for a serious close-up.

It’s also back on the market for $7,495,000.

Built in 1923, the two-level Hancock Park estate was designed by silent-film star and architect Jack Donovan, who dubbed it Casa Cubana.

The home’s Hollywood legacy was cemented when it was featured in the 1997, in the neo-noir crime classic. It served as Basinger’s residence in her Oscar-winning performance as a high-class call girl, Lynn Bracken. A young Russell Crowe spent a lot of time on the doorstep, which used to be red.

Much of the classic Hollywood glamour remains intact, but it’s been spiced up and highlighted by Hoge and Meyerson. The team had the vision of “bringing to life what Donovan may have designed today for California quintessential living.”

That includes leaving in classic features like the terra-cotta tile roof, thick plaster walls with massive, arched windows, wide-plank wood floors, as well as staircases with custom wrought-iron railings and colorful tile risers.

The most notable renovations happened in the bathrooms and kitchen, which needed to be brought into the 21st century.

Prior to the makeover, the kitchen was all 1950s mauve and linoleum. Now it’s an absolute jaw-dropper—wide open, with a massive island and marble surfaces, custom cabinetry, professional-quality appliances, as well as an adjacent butler’s pantry and service kitchen.

The master suite also came in for a major overhaul. It still has the gorgeous arched windows, French doors, and a balcony, but the rest of the space is light, bright, and modern. There are dual sitting areas, two walk-in closets, as well as a spacious and spectacular master bathroom with a steam shower and soaking bathtub.

The large lot has always boasted sprawling lawns, a pool, and mature landscaping. Now those areas are complemented by two outdoor fireplaces, a bocce ball court, a putting green, and new dining areas shaded by mature olive trees. The pool and spa have been redone, and a massive deck has views of the golf course.

In addition, a brand-new detached two-story guesthouse includes a petite chef’s kitchen, office space, a bathroom, and an upstairs bedroom.

The location really didn’t require any improvement. Close to historic Hancock Park, the home is bordered on two sides by the Wilshire Country Club and has views of the links below.
