For a grand home in Pacific Palisades, CA, humor and sex appeal form a potent combo that is difficult to resist.
Add in a sprinkle of celebrity, and you’ll see why this home is so attractive.
Any estate that was once the home one of the greatest American humorists (Will Rogers) and a ravishing actress (Michelle Pfeiffer), is bound to be intriguing. And now, the regal brick home, built in 1935, is available at an even more intriguing price—reduced from $20 million to $18 million.
It’s the first time the property has been on the market in decades. The current owners purchased it from Pfeiffer and her husband, David E. Kelley, the TV titan, in 2001.
It was in lovely shape when the current owners acquired it, but they put their own spin on the pedigreed home. They brought in the celebrated designer Michael S. Smith to redesign and expand the compound. On 4 acres of lush land in Pacific Palisades, it’s just a gallop or two from the famous Will Rogers State Park Polo Fields.
In this equestrian community, it’s not uncommon to see neighbors on horses trotting down the street.
But this estate’s equestrian accommodations have been converted into a large gym and a newly built, 1,244-square-foot, two-story guesthouse.
Other buildings on the property include a 6,250-square-foot main residence, a 1,031-square-foot poolhouse, and a small staff cottage. The compound offers a total of 9,758 square feet of chic living space, with seven bedrooms and 10.5 bathrooms.
The main residence features a traditional layout, with formal dining and living rooms, each with attractive sitting nooks and French doors and windows that lead to the lush gardens outside.
It also boasts an updated country-style kitchen with custom glass-front cabinetry, a large central island topped with woodblock, and a cozy breakfast area.
The library-office area is especially charming, thanks to a cozy fireplace, custom built-in bookcases, and a spiral staircase that leads to a gallery above.
Three of the four bedrooms in the main residence are located on the second floor, but the huge master suite and its luxe bathroom are conveniently situated on the ground floor.
As lovely as the interiors are, the grounds are what take your breath away. Multiple, well-manicured paths meander through the property, with numerous seating, dining, and conversation areas, as well as a vast, sparkling pool and spa.
Will Rogers became one of America’s most beloved humorists in the 1920s and ’30s, after starting out as a vaudeville performer. He went on to write a popular syndicated newspaper column, and appeared on radio and in many movies. He was also a great aviation enthusiast and died in a plane crash at the age of 55.
Pfeiffer, 63, was nominated this year for an Oscar for her performance in “French Exit.” She has also been nominated for Oscars for roles in “Dangerous Liaisons” and “The Fabulous Baker Boys.” She married her husband, the television creator, writer, producer, and director David E. Kelley, in 1993.
Aaron Kirman, Liz Gottainer, and Jeeb O’Reilly of Aaron Kirman group at Compass have the listing.
